🏔️ A Week in Gangtok: Where Himalayan Calm Meets Sikkimese Soul
If you ever want to press pause on the chaos of everyday life, go to Gangtok. I spent a week in this Himalayan gem, and I still carry the scent of wet pine, warm thukpa, and prayer wheels turning in my head.
🌄 Why Gangtok Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List
Tucked in the eastern Himalayas, Gangtok is a blend of misty mornings, peaceful monasteries, rich local food, and postcard-worthy views. If you're craving a balance of serenity and adventure, let this 7-day Gangtok itinerary be your guide.
📅 Day 1: Arrival in Gangtok – First Sips, First Impressions
How to reach Gangtok:
I landed at Bagdogra Airport and took a shared taxi (₹400–₹500) to Gangtok — a 4-5 hour scenic ride along the Teesta River.
Where I stayed:
🏨 Tag Along Backpackers – budget-friendly, clean, and walkable to MG Marg.
First evening:
Sipped cappuccino at The Coffee Shop, overlooking MG Marg – Gangtok’s car-free promenade lined with shops, cafés, and laughter.
🛕 Day 2: Rumtek Monastery – Meditation in Motion
Highlight:
A spiritual half-day trip to Rumtek Monastery, about 24 km from Gangtok.
Entry fee: ₹10
Vibe: Chanting monks, golden stupas, and mountain views that make you introspective.

Permit Alert:
Foreigners aren’t allowed here, and Indian tourists need permits (arranged via local travel agents).

📚 Café Fiction – perfect for slow travel souls.
Evening pick-me-up:
☕ Baker’s Café – top-floor seating + chocolate eclairs + valley views = unforgettable.
SEO Tip:
Search "best cafés in Gangtok" — these two will top the list, and for good reason.
🚡 Day 5: Ganesh Tok, Gangtok Ropeway & A Rooftop Dinner
Morning:
Short cab ride to Ganesh Tok — panoramic city views and a quiet temple atmosphere.
Activity highlight:
🚠 Gangtok Ropeway – ₹110 for a 1 km ride. Sit on the left side going down!
Dinner recommendation:
🍲 The Dragon Wok – spicy pork momos + local Hit beer = winner combo.
Night vibe:
Hostel rooftop. Ukulele jam session. Clear skies. Gangtok magic.
🧘♂️ Day 6: Namgyal Institute & Flower Power
Cultural immersion:
📍 Namgyal Institute of Tibetology – entry ₹20. Rare manuscripts, thankas, and Buddhist history.
Unexpected gem:
🌸 Flower Exhibition Centre – blooming orchids and riotous colors.
Evening tip:
Walk MG Marg at dusk. Buy prayer flags. Talk to locals. Let the city seep in.
